The no-nonsense Urban Arrow

Some bikes get more complicated every year. More tech, more power, more components. The Urban Arrow Family Active Plus Classic proves that you’re not always waiting for that.

This is perhaps the most robust, no‑nonsense version of the Urban Arrow Family. A quiet Bosch Active Line Plus motor with 50 Nm, a rigid front fork, a low and spacious box and technology that has proven itself over many years now.

No unnecessary muscle power. Just hop on, kids in, and ride. 🚲

And at DrBeyk we don’t say that just because it sounds good: we’ve been using the Active Plus ourselves in our rental fleet for about seven years now.

A cargo bike doesn’t exactly get an easy life there.

🎯 Who is the Urban Arrow Active Plus Classic ideal for?

The Active Plus Classic is an excellent choice when durability, load capacity and simplicity matter more to you than maximum motor power or a suspension fork.

(✓) You regularly transport one, two or even three children
(✓) You want a high load capacity
(✓) You want a quiet and smooth Bosch motor
(✓) You want a cargo bike that can handle intensive daily use
(✓) You value low maintenance costs
(✓) You regularly carry a dog or a larger/heavier passenger
(✓) You want a low box that children can easily climb into by themselves
(✓) You mainly want years of carefree riding

For families who say “just give me the most solid one”, this Urban Arrow ranks very high on our list.

50 Nm: far more than just a city motor

The Bosch Active Line Plus delivers 50 Nm of torque and does so wonderfully quietly.

And we actually think that last point is pretty important. A city like Amsterdam already produces enough noise. As far as we’re concerned, your electric cargo bike doesn’t need to add to that. 😉

Is 50 Nm enough for an Urban Arrow?

For most normal rides: yes.

With children and luggage you’ll regularly use a higher assistance mode, but that’s exactly what the assistance is there for. The motor takes you smoothly through the city and our own experience shows that its range of use certainly doesn’t stop at the city limits.

We’ve been renting out these Urban Arrows for years and regularly see families who come back with one or two children on longer rides across the Netherlands do. And we don’t get complaints from those renters that the motor is underpowered.

In practice, that tells us more than just a number on a spec sheet.

So when does a more powerful motor make sense?

More power can of course be nice.

Do you, for example, live in IJburg and ride heavily loaded over the bridge every day? Do you often cycle through open polder areas with strong headwinds? Do you want to keep riding close to 25 km/h more easily in tough conditions?

Then a more powerful Bosch motor like on the Advanced or the Pro simply more reserve power.

But that doesn’t mean everyone needs that extra motor power.

🎯 Don’t automatically choose the most powerful motor. Choose the motor that matches how you actually ride.

At DrBeyk we haven’t had a single customer who later said they regretted choosing the 50 Nm Active Plus. Our rental customers also manage remarkably well with it in everyday use.

Important facts about this model: "The more complex the technology, the more noise it makes. To make the motor more powerful, a more complicated transmission with more gears and more wear is needed. So don’t choose a more powerful motor than you actually need. On top of that, the components are subjected to more stress as the motor gets stronger, which increases maintenance. This model has the highest load capacity (250 kg) because it doesn’t have a suspension fork. The box is also nice and low so children can easily climb in by themselves."

Up to 250 kg total weight: built to really carry something

This is where the Active Plus Classic really starts to set itself apart.

The maximum permitted total weight is 250 kg. That includes the bike, rider, passengers and luggage together.

Depending on the configuration, the bike itself weighs around 55–60 kg. If you safely allow about 100 kg for the rider, that leaves roughly around 90 kg left for children, passengers and luggage.

And yes: you can fit quite a lot in there.

📦 Groceries for a week
👧 Taking the kids to school
🐕 Dog along to the woods
👨 An adult passenger
🎒 Kids and luggage

Precisely for people who truly use their cargo bike as a replacement for a second car, that load capacity is a big advantage.

No suspension fork – and that can actually be an advantage

The FamilyNext has a suspension fork and that gives noticeably more comfort on cobblestones, speed bumps and poor asphalt.

The Active Plus Classic deliberately has a rigid front fork.

That may sound like a downside, but for a true utility bike it also has clear advantages. There are fewer moving parts, a rigid front fork requires hardly any specific maintenance and is very suitable for intensive use and heavy loads.

We also wouldn’t want to load a suspension fork to its maximum on a regular basis. If you often carry a lot of weight, you have a good reason to look specifically at this classic version.

And there’s another unexpected advantage: this also makes the Active Plus Classic ride just a bit more direct and lively. No pedal energy is lost in movement of the front suspension.

FamilyNext for extra comfort. Active Plus Classic for maximum simplicity and durability.

No winner or loser — two different choices.

A lower box that truly makes a difference

The box on the Active Plus Classic sits a little lower and is nice and spacious.

You especially notice that when getting in.

Small children can climb into the box more easily on their own. For a dog, every centimetre of step-in height makes a difference. And if you ever carry an adult passenger, that lower step-in suddenly becomes even more interesting.

🚲 And off you go

It may look like a small difference on paper. In daily use it can be surprisingly important.

Seven years tested by us as rental bikes

This is probably the most important argument we can give you about this bike.

DrBeyk has been using the Urban Arrow Active Plus in its own rental fleet for about seven years.

An rental bike is used by many different people. One renter treats it as if it were their own bike. Another… a little less so. 😉

That’s exactly why we now know particularly well what this Urban Arrow can handle.

Naturally, our rental bikes are checked after every rental period. In practice, for the larger regular service we work with an interval of roughly 3,000 km. During this service we clean and check, among other things, the brakes and replace the brake pads where necessary.

With a chain version we proactively replace chain and sprockets at around 5,000 km to keep the bike running nice and smoothly. In practice you can often ride it for longer, but for our rental fleet we prefer preventive maintenance.

And after that?

On you go.

That’s why at DrBeyk we sometimes jokingly call this version “indestructible”. Not literally, of course — but after years of rentals we do know why we call it that.

Chain or Gates Belt Drive?

At DrBeyk you can also choose the Active Plus Classic with a Gates Carbon Belt Drive.

A traditional chain is simple, reliable and cheaper to buy. But if you want to think as little as possible about your drivetrain, you should definitely look at a belt drive.

From our own maintenance experience, we see that the service interval of the belt drive roughly three to four times longer can be than the interval at which we replace chain and sprockets on our intensively used chain bikes.

A belt also doesn’t need to be lubricated regularly like a chain.

💡 Lots of kilometres and as little maintenance as possible? Then in our view the Belt Drive is the perfect match with this bike’s no‑nonsense character.

Active Plus Classic or FamilyNext?

This is probably the most important choice.

Choose the Urban Arrow Family Active Plus Classic when what you value most is:

(🔧) simplicity and proven durability
(📦) high load capacity
(🐕) a low step-in for children or a dog
(👨) a heavier or adult passenger on a regular basis
(🤫) a quiet 50 Nm motor
(💰) a sharp price–quality ratio
(🛠️) as little maintenance‑sensitive tech as possible

Opt instead for a Urban Arrow FamilyNext when the extra comfort of a suspension fork is more important to you.

And within the FamilyNext range, the same question as always applies: how much motor power do you actually need?

For relaxed city use, 50 Nm can be perfectly adequate. For lots of headwind, bridges, long distances or if you want to more easily ride close to 25 km/h under heavy conditions, a more powerful version can be more pleasant.

And which battery do you need?

The same applies here: bigger is not automatically better.

The quiet 50 Nm Bosch motor can use energy efficiently in normal use. If you mainly make short and medium city trips, you don’t automatically need to choose the largest available battery.

Do you ride many kilometres every day or regularly take longer trips with children? Then extra battery capacity naturally gives you more freedom and you won’t need to charge as often.

During a test ride, be sure to tell us how many kilometres you actually ride per day. We’d rather recommend the right battery than simply the biggest one.

Why buy the Active Plus Classic from DrBeyk Amsterdam?

Because we don’t just sell this bike.

We use it ourselves. For years.

At DrBeyk we’ve been working with cargo bikes for over 25 years. From our location in Amsterdam-Zuid we sell, service and rent out cargo bikes to families from Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands and Belgium.

That means we don’t just know what an Urban Arrow looks like when it comes fresh out of the box. We also know how it holds up after thousands of kilometres of real use.

And that’s exactly why we have such a soft spot for the Urban Arrow Family Active Plus Classic.

It may not have the most luxury. Not the most powerful motor. And no suspension fork either.

But if you simply want a quiet, strong, practical cargo bike that can work hard for many years?

Then this might be the Urban Arrow you’re looking for.

🚲 Come and take a test ride at DrBeyk Amsterdam. Feel free to bring the kids — or the dog. We’re happy to let you try the Active Plus Classic and FamilyNext side by side, so you don’t pick the most expensive bike, but the one that best fits your daily use.
