In our view, this is the golden middle ground within the Urban Arrow FamilyNext range. Comfortable thanks to the suspension fork, powerful enough for almost any everyday situation and equipped with a higher box that gives many parents an extra sense of protection.

The Bosch Performance Line motor delivers 75 Nm torque. That puts the Advanced at a very pleasant point: clearly more reserve than the 50 Nm versions, without automatically having to go for the most powerful and most expensive model.

School run, groceries, two kids, headwind, bridges, longer distances or a trip outside the city?

The Advanced suits a very wide range of families.

For many families, the Essential is enough. The Pro offers even more power. The Advanced sits right in between.

And that’s exactly why it’s so easy to recommend.

75 Nm: exactly that extra reserve you regularly do use

The Bosch Performance Line motor delivers 75 Nm torque.

On paper that’s 25 Nm more than the 50 Nm motor on the Essential and Active Plus Classic. In practice you mainly notice the difference when a cargo bike really has to work hard.

🌉 Riding up a bridge or overpass
👧 Two kids and groceries in the box
🚲 Longer daily distances
🌾 Riding outside the city or through the polders

The extra pulling power makes it easier for the bike to build up speed under those conditions and to reach the assisted top speed of 25 km/h keeps going.

That doesn’t mean you always need 75 Nm. As we explain with our other Urban Arrows as well: for calm city use, 50 Nm can be perfectly sufficient.

The difference lies mainly in the reserve power.

With the Advanced you don’t have to think as often about what kind of ride you’re doing today. And that might just be its greatest strength.

IJburg, headwind and that bridge? Go for the Advanced

A nice real-world example from Amsterdam:

Do you live in IJburg, you carry children every day and you regularly have to battle headwinds going over one of the big bridges?

In that case, we would sooner choose the Advanced than a 50 Nm version.

Not because you can’t get up the bridge with 50 Nm. Of course you can.

With 75 Nm you only get noticeably more support when you actually need it. Under heavier conditions you’ll reach your desired speed more easily and won’t have to work as hard yourself.

For someone who makes those kinds of trips every day, that difference is simply nice to have.

Suspension fork: comfort you notice every single day

An important difference compared with the Urban Arrow Family Active Plus Classic is the suspension fork.

The FamilyNext Advanced has 60 mm travel, which helps absorb cobblestones, potholes, speed bumps and rough tarmac better.

In Amsterdam you won’t have to look far to enjoy that. 😉

You’ll especially appreciate the difference on bumpy rides. Not just for the person behind the handlebars, but also for the kids in the box.

On the other hand, a suspension fork has more moving parts than the rigid fork of the Active Plus Classic and can therefore require more attention and maintenance.

If what you mainly want is maximum simplicity, high load capacity and as little maintenance-sensitive tech as possible, then the Active Plus Classic a particularly interesting choice.

Do you actually want more ride comfort?

Then the FamilyNext Advanced.

The higher FamilyNext box: a pleasantly sheltered feeling

The FamilyNext has a different box from the classic Urban Arrow Family. The sides are higher and that gives many parents a pleasant, sheltered feeling when their children are sitting up front.

We wouldn’t go so far as to claim that a higher box automatically makes a bike “safer.”

But we absolutely hear and understand that many parents feel it’s safer.

Children sit nicely enclosed in the familiar EPP box and the higher sides reinforce that feeling.

That’s where the Active Plus Classic offers a practical advantage in return: its lower box makes it easier for children, dogs and even adult passengers to get in by themselves.

So this really comes down to what you personally find important.

Kiox display: much more than just your speed

The Advanced is equipped with the Bosch Kiox display.

That gives you far more information on the road than just speed and battery level. The display also integrates nicely into the Bosch Smart System, so you can use various functions and ride data via the Bosch Flow app.

And there’s one accessory that we at DrBeyk find particularly handy: the Bosch SmartphoneGrip.

That lets you neatly integrate your smartphone into your Bosch cockpit. Handy if you regularly use navigation on longer rides.

📱 Especially if the cargo bike is your daily mode of transport, these are the kinds of features you’ll grow to appreciate more and more over time.

Manual shifting or AutomatiQ?

With the FamilyNext Advanced you can choose between manual shifting and Enviolo AutomatiQ.

Which is better mainly depends on what you prefer.

With manual shifting you determine your own cadence. That gives you control and keeps the technology relatively simple.

With AutomatiQ you set your preferred cadence and the system largely takes over the shifting. Traffic lights, accelerating, braking: you have to think much less about your gears.

🚦 AutomatiQ is mainly a luxury that you’ll surprisingly quickly start to see as normal in city traffic.

Neither is automatically the right choice. During a test ride you’ll usually notice quite quickly where your preference lies.

Essential, Advanced or Pro?

Here’s where it gets interesting.

FamilyNext Essential – 50 Nm

For families who mainly make relaxed city trips and don’t need unnecessary motor power. Quiet, efficient and a sensible entry point into the FamilyNext range.

FamilyNext Advanced – 75 Nm

The all-rounder. More reserve for wind, bridges, loads and longer distances, combined with the comfort of the FamilyNext.

FamilyNext Pro – 85 Nm

For those who want maximum assistance and expect frequent heavy or demanding use. The most powerful choice within the FamilyNext range.

💡 Unsure, and your budget allows for the Advanced? Then 75 Nm is the sweet spot for a great many families.

You’re buying enough reserve so you won’t later find yourself thinking “if only I had…”, without automatically opting for the heaviest and most expensive model.

And what about the Active Plus Classic?

We think that comparison is at least as important.

The Urban Arrow Family Active Plus Classic is, together with the Advanced, one of our most popular choices at DrBeyk.
