Calm, quiet and just strong enough

Not every family needs the most powerful motor. In fact, if you mainly ride in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Antwerp or another flat city, it may be that less can actually be more.

The Urban Arrow FamilyNext Essential is the entry-level model in the FamilyNext range and in our view is mainly intended for families looking for a comfortable, reliable and wonderfully quiet electric cargo bike for everyday use.

School, daycare, groceries, playground, friends’ houses… that’s the Essential’s home turf. 🚲

The quiet Bosch motor delivers 60 Nm torque. That’s enough for normal city use with one or two small children in the box. You’ll often ride in a high support mode, but that’s exactly what the assistance is there for.

The big advantage? The motor feels pleasantly calm and runs quietly. On top of that, a less powerful drive unit doesn’t have to constantly push huge forces through the drivetrain. In normal use, that means a gentler load on the chain, sprockets and other drive components.

In short: no overkill, but exactly enough bike for anyone who doesn’t feel the need to be first off the line at every traffic light. 😉

🎯 Who is the FamilyNext Essential ideal for?

The Essential is an excellent match if you mainly do short and medium rides in the city and usually carry one or two young children.

(✓) You mainly ride in flat urban areas
(✓) You have one or two small children
(✓) You value a quiet motor
(✓) You don’t need to accelerate at maximum speed all the time
(✓) You want the comfort of the new FamilyNext without paying for more motor power than you need
(✓) You want a solid cargo bike for school runs, daycare, groceries and everyday family rides

For many young families this is simply the most sensible FamilyNext.

FamilyNext comfort without unnecessary muscle power

The Essential may be the entry-level model, but you’re still riding the new generation of Urban Arrow FamilyNext.

One of the most important improvements is the suspension front fork. As a result, cobblestones, speed bumps and rough tarmac are absorbed noticeably more comfortably. Especially with kids up front, that’s a very welcome upgrade compared to a completely rigid cargo bike.

The updated FamilyNext box still gives children a sheltered seat and gives the bike that typical Urban Arrow look: long, low, stable and surprisingly easy to steer once you’re riding.

📦 Two kids in, bags on board and off you go.

That’s exactly what an Urban Arrow is good at.

50 Nm: enough for the city, but know your usage

Here at DrBeyk we’d rather give you an honest answer than a sales pitch.

The The 60 Nm motor on the FamilyNext Essential is no powerhouse. With kids and luggage you’ll regularly use the highest support mode. For normal use in Amsterdam that’s usually absolutely fine.

But if, for example, you live on IJburg and do you have to cross a big bridge into a headwind with two kids every day? Do you often ride longer distances outside the city? Or do you ride a lot through open polder where the wind has free rein?

In that case we’d be more inclined to look at the Urban Arrow FamilyNext Advanced take a look.

Essential or Advanced? 60 Nm versus 75 Nm

The FamilyNext Advanced features a Bosch Performance motor with 75 Nm torque. You’ll really feel that extra 25 Nm when conditions get tougher.

Think of:

(💨) strong headwinds
(🌉) long bridges and flyovers
(📦) a more heavily loaded box
(🚲) longer daily distances
(🌾) riding through open polder country

Under those conditions, the Advanced reaches its cruising speed more easily towards 25 km/h and you don’t have to work as hard yourself.

If you mainly ride calm city trips, though, you certainly don’t always need that extra power.

And that’s exactly why the Essential exists.

Don’t automatically buy the most powerful motor. Buy the motor that matches your daily ride.

Why a calmer motor can be interesting

More motor power always sounds appealing on paper. Still, a stronger motor doesn’t only have advantages.

The 60 Nm motor of the FamilyNext Essential is tuned for normal city use and can handle its energy very efficiently. You simply have less brute motor power available, and during relaxed city rides the drive system doesn’t need to deliver high power all the time.

That has two interesting advantages: the motor feels quiet and smooth …and for this kind of use you don’t necessarily need to choose the largest battery.

💡 For a small family that mainly rides in the city, 60 Nm can actually be a very smart combination: plenty of support, a smooth-running drive unit and efficient energy use.

On top of that, less motor power also means that smaller forces are transmitted through the drivetrain. With appropriate use, the chain, sprockets and other drivetrain components are therefore subjected to less stress than with a more powerful motor that is regularly pushed to its limits.

That of course doesn’t mean an Essential doesn’t need maintenance — every electric cargo bike deserves regular maintenance — but for normal city use the Essential is a great example of how not choosing more tech and power than you actually need.

And if carrying capacity matters more?

There’s yet another Urban Arrow that often gets overlooked at DrBeyk: the Urban Arrow Family Active Plus.

Are you mainly looking for an extremely solid family cargo bike and is maximum load capacity more important than a suspension fork? Then the Active Plus is definitely worth a look.

The classic Family has no suspension fork and therefore a different construction. On top of that, the box sits nice and low.

The latter is especially practical as children get a bit bigger:

🐕 dog in the front
🎒 room for a school bag too
🚲 and off you go

Children can step into the low box more easily by themselves, and for a dog the lower step-in is particularly pleasant too.

The FamilyNext Essential wins on comfort thanks to the suspension fork and updated FamilyNext construction. The Active Plus is particularly interesting when simplicity, a low box and high load capacity top your wish list.

Urban Arrow or a different cargo bike after all?

If you’re looking for an electric cargo bike these days, you’ll come across many different concepts. From Lovens and Bullitt to compact cargo bikes such as Muli and Yoonit, and longtails such as Veloe, Bike43 and Tern all the way up to the classic large family cargo bike.

The Urban Arrow FamilyNext very clearly goes its own way: lots of space for children, a long stable wheelbase and a large EPP box for everyday family use.

Within that family, the Essential is the version for people who say:

“I mainly want a good Urban Arrow. I don’t need a rocket engine in it.”

And there’s actually a surprisingly strong case to be made for that. 🎯

Which battery should you choose?

Because the 60 Nm motor on the FamilyNext Essential can use energy efficiently in normal city use, you also don’t not automatically choosing the biggest battery.

Do you mainly ride short trips to school, daycare, the supermarket and sports club? Then a smaller battery can already suit your usage perfectly. You save on the purchase price and don’t pay for battery capacity you’ll hardly use in practice.

If you ride a lot of kilometres, often cycle with heavy loads or simply want to charge less often, then of course a larger battery remains convenient.
